There have been a whole lot of happy anglers in Cheticamp this spring thanks to fun and educational programming put on by the Cheticamp River Salmon Association (CRSA) and Fish Nova Scotia.
For the second year in a row, the CRSA partnered with Sabrina Wolthers, Sportfish Development Officer with Nova Scotia Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, to put on a free Community Learn to Fish event as well as host a morning of fishing for the Green Door in Cheticamp.
The Community Learn to Fish event was held the evening of June 6 th and was open to anyone – including the young, old, and newcomers to the area – interested in learning about recreational sportfishing. Participants learned how to set up fishing tackle, perform basic casting, and practice proper handling for catch and release fishing. Sabrina taught participants how to identify a variety of common native and non-native fish species, while CRSA staff also helped the anglers and ran a BBQ.
An enthusiastic group from the Green Door – a non-profit organization in Cheticamp that works with people with physical and mental health-related challenges – also enjoyed a successful morning of fishing with Sabrina Wolthers and the CRSA. On June 7 th , anglers with the Green Door arrived at Robert’s pond on the Cheticamp Back Road and spent nearly two hours practicing their casting and – much to everyone’s excitement - catching some beautiful brook trout.
